On March 16, 2007, at 1:00 a.m., the subject was attacked in bed by his schizophrenic stepson who stabbed him and his wife approximately 15 times with a carving knife. He sustained multiple stab wounds, with most deflected by his left arm, but two reaching his stomach and two more to his left knee. After talking the attacker out of "finishing it off," he bound a severed artery in his arm with a sheet and called an ambulance. Covered in blood and losing consciousness, he truly thought he was about to die. It was 1:50 a.m. when paramedics arrived. During this critical period, he experienced a vivid otherworldly scene: it was sunny and pleasantly warm as he walked down through a field of grass and flowers toward a pretty wood and shimmering lake. He sensed someone he liked beside him but couldn't see them directly and didn't know who they were. There were pleasant sounds around them. He wanted to stay but realized he couldn't and "really had to go." He then returned to consciousness screaming and jerking, with paramedics trying to calm him. During transport, he experienced another altered state where he seemed detached and floating above everything, with visual distortions showing extreme contrast - shadows going black while light areas became terrifically bright, crystalline shimmering white. He was later told he had lost four pints of blood and had been resuscitated. He spent a week in the ward with months of physical therapy ahead to regain use of his left hand. He occasionally feels that he is actually dead and this reality has no substance.
