The subject overdosed on prescribed medications (MS Contin and Ativan) and was told they stopped breathing for seven minutes. They woke up a week later in the ICU and spent another week and a half hospitalized. During the period of unconsciousness from overdose to hospitalization, they experienced a hyperreal state of awareness. They remember people talking around them and felt like they were floating and moving around the ambulance. In the beginning, they experienced extreme pain and sensed an evil presence. Later, they felt joy, especially after waking up, and felt they had undergone a spiritual experience. The contrast between the initial negative sensations and later positive feelings marked a significant spiritual transformation.
