On March 3, 2001, at approximately 2:00 a.m., Jim experienced a massive heart attack that felt like being hit in the chest with a sledgehammer. After taking two aspirins and having his wife call 911, he was in intense pain when paramedics arrived. According to the paramedics, he flatlined during treatment. Initially, he heard one paramedic say "Stay with us Jim," then heard nothing as all pain disappeared. He entered a state of total peace, bliss, and harmony simultaneously. He observed a tunnel illuminated with white light that was bright but not harsh on the eyes. For an extended period, he found himself following another being toward the tunnel, unable to catch up to this unknown figure who was ahead of him. This peaceful state lasted considerable time before he suddenly felt intense pain and burning in his chest again as the paramedics resuscitated him. They had shocked him three times, up to 360 joules, to bring him back. Upon return, he heard their voices and felt very upset that they had disturbed his peace, reportedly using rough language toward them. Later, he shared his experience with an Ojibwa Shaman who identified the figure he was following as his spiritual guide. The experience remains profoundly important to him despite skeptical reactions from others, including dismissal from a Catholic nun.
