The subject was a nursing student diagnosed with a tumor of the right kidney requiring surgery. Prior to the operation, they felt a strong sense of trust in God with their minister present. During the surgery under general anesthesia, the subject experienced an out-of-body awareness where they awakened and observed themselves on the operating table from above. They could see the tops of the surgical caps worn by two doctors performing the operation. Following this realization that they were viewing their own body, they began moving through what they described as a tunnel through dark space at an angle. Initially frightened, they gradually became calmer as the tunnel grew warmer and brighter. The ascent brought increasing peace and acceptance, culminating in what they described as "ultimate peacefulness" - a profound sense of well-being accompanied by intense bright light and warmth. Behind the light, they heard a voice that communicated with them and believed they saw their deceased grandmother Susie. The voice told them "it's not your time" and "you'll be there in the end," which disappointed them as they had to leave. The descent was rapid at the same angle, ending abruptly when they awakened in severe pain in the recovery room. A female doctor they never saw again leaned over saying "it'll be alright." The mother later revealed the doctors had emerged covered in blood, and years later a wire worked its way out suggesting complications during deep suturing. The experience gave the subject psychic abilities to predict deaths and transformed their personality to value relationships and enjoy life with certainty of God's existence.
