In March 1968 at a firebase near Cam Lo, Vietnam, the experiencer was speaking with Lieutenant Lane about a new job and promotion. They had walked downhill away from others when a 122 rocket exploded a few yards behind him. Immediately knowing he was hit, he said "Oh God, I'm hit," then felt himself rising out of his body. Floating upward, he passed through a "layer" of souls hanging in space - beings in extremely long, hooded robes with their backs to him. As he passed through them, one turned and gave him a sad smile. He then rose into a tunnel and saw a very bright light ahead, moving toward it. At the light, which seemed to guard a gateway, a powerful voice told him he had to go back, that he had work to do. He then became conscious in a bunker being treated, having lost most of his blood. Lieutenant Lane was killed by the same rocket. He was immediately sent home and retired from his wounds. The experience left him with certainty about the afterlife and his purpose.
