On September 6, 1983, during a night flight, a military pilot was preparing to take off in a MiG-23 aircraft (SM 240). Prior to takeoff, he experienced a tingling sensation in his toes, a premonition that something drastic would occur, but he ignored the warning and proceeded with the flight. After takeoff, with undercarriage and flaps retracted at 200 meters altitude, he saw something approaching in the darkness.
Instinctively ducking his head, he heard a jarring engine noise followed by immediate engine seizure. The hydraulic system failed simultaneously, causing complete loss of flying controls. The aircraft became engulfed in a ball of fire, leaving only one option: ejection. At barely 300 meters altitude with the aircraft descending rapidly, a remarkable experience occurred during the critical moment. As he reached for the ejection seat handles, his entire life span from age six to that present moment flashed before him in a comprehensive life review. He successfully ejected with safe separation and parachute deployment. Despite going through three high-tension electrical cables, which he later called providential survival, he managed to cross a water canal and land in a plowed, watery field that cushioned his impact. He sustained only minor bruises and walked to a nearby village. The next morning when collecting the parachute, they discovered he had miraculously passed through three high-tension cables without electrocution. A Court of Inquiry later determined that an owl had been ingested into the engine, causing the catastrophic failure. The life review during the ejection sequence remains his most vivid memory of the incident.
