On November 11, 1993, in Zurich, Switzerland, a 17-year-old was poisoned with strychnine (rat poison mixed with sugar) by an emotionally disturbed man attempting murder. Feeling sick at school, she was sent home but collapsed on a stone bench by the Limmat River, unable to continue walking. She died while watching ducks in the water, experiencing her first of two cardiac and respiratory arrests.
She awoke in terror and disorientation in what seemed like the same location but with a gray veil over everything. Realizing she wasn't sitting, standing, or lying - nothing touched the ground - she existed in pure consciousness consumed by fear, remorse, guilt, and despair. She could float through air and see anywhere without limitations. At 2 PM, remembering a planned meeting with her boyfriend on the bridge, she floated there and confirmed he hadn't arrived yet (later verified). Her attempts to scream produced no vocal sound, only thought-screams. Hearing underwater-like voices, she discovered paramedics working frantically on someone on the bench - herself. A glass wall seemed to separate them. Despite getting directly in their faces and screaming mentally, they neither saw nor heard her. She flew up to the tree crowns, crying without tears, feeling separated from everyone while trapped in the world. When paramedics called "Michele" (her ID's second name), she realized they were trying to reach her and was sucked back into her body with overwhelming tightness and violent convulsions requiring restraints. She asked a paramedic why he hadn't answered her earlier; he confirmed she was dead at 2 PM. Mistaken for a drug addict, she was taken to police instead of hospital, collapsed again with a second arrest (experiencing only darkness), and finally received proper medical care in ICU where poisoning was diagnosed. The experience left her unable to be in darkness, needing lights on to sleep.
