A five-year-old child experienced a sudden, painful inguinal hernia while trying to lift a cousin. The intense pain led to an emergency hospital visit where doctors decided immediate surgery was necessary. The child was taken to the operating room on a gurney and remembers a mask being placed over their face for ether administration - a tricky anesthetic for young children at that time.
Upon losing consciousness, the child found themselves observing the operating room scene from several feet above, floating peacefully while watching the doctors and their own body on the operating table. The body, still in prone position as on the table, began turning slowly toward a window high up on the wall. A bright streaming light came through this window, and the child felt drawn to it, beginning to float slowly in that direction. Just as they were about to pass through the opening and into the light, they awoke in the hospital room, gagging and vomiting from the ether's effects. The nurse was angry about the mess. When the child told the nurse about the experience, she laughed and said it was just dreaming. The mother similarly dismissed it as imagination when told. The experiencer never shared the story again for decades until reading about other NDEs. The event remained vivid for 63 years, as fresh as if it happened yesterday. Since then, they've had numerous precognitive dreams and at least two non-NDE out-of-body experiences, suggesting lasting psychic sensitivity.
