Hospitalized in Detroit for a subchorionic hematoma at 24 weeks pregnant, the experiencer was monitored for nearly a month before emergency C-section at 29 weeks on March 7, 2017. During delivery, massive bleeding occurred when the placenta shredded and tore the uterine wall. She heard nurses counting over 50 sponges and felt her breathing slow, then heard her heartbeat followed by silence and a flat-line sound. From above, she observed the medical team performing a whipple stitch as nurses provided sponges on instruments, noting how pale her face looked. She felt pulled away yet heard a nurse saying "stay with me hun." White light hit her with unprecedented warmth like a fuzzy blanket of heat, experiencing immense, pure love. A single butterfly flew into the light. Her best friend's mother (died October 2015), whom she'd been with at death and who she'd asked to help them have a daughter, spoke from the light. She said "I know it is beautiful here but you can't stay," urging her to return for her boys, husband, and newborn daughter. She asked her to hug and kiss her daughters, saying she missed them but was okay. Despite wanting to stay in the beautiful light and love, she was pulled backward into darkness and her body. She awoke feeling excruciating pain. In recovery, the nurse said her heart stopped for a minute but they got her back, nearly requiring hysterectomy. The experience left her with PTSD initially, taking a year to process, eventually leading to greater involvement with her children and NICU volunteer work.
