The experiencer was rushed to hospital on August 12th with a ruptured appendix. Initially misdiagnosed as only a "rumbling" appendix, they spent 12 hours deteriorating while drugged. When operated on Friday the 13th, the mistake was discovered and frantic major surgery took place to remove poison from the abdominal cavity. They were taken to a side ward with the expectation of death within hours. Their mother was called from 300 miles away as death was expected.
Drifting in and out of consciousness, the experiencer became aware of looking down at their body from the ceiling. They saw their body in awful pain and felt relieved not to be in it, experiencing complete calm and indescribable peace. A deep black valley appeared to the left, and the elderly woman from the neighboring bed appeared beside them, singing to herself without noticing them. The woman called out "Can you help me with this mother?" and a warm, benign presence came from beyond the valley - her mother, who took her hand as they crossed together, singing. The experiencer tried to follow but was held back at the valley boundary. They sensed indescribable joy, peace, and tremendous light emanating from the other side, desperately wanting to cross. They were turned away gently, saw their body in agonizing pain again, and knew with certainty they would return to it. Despite distress about returning, they came to in the side ward knowing the elderly woman in the next bed was dead before nurses realized it. Meanwhile, the experiencer's partner was awakened by a terrible howling dog in their driveway - a very large black dog howling in a terrifying way. When she went to scare it away, the dog had vanished with no trace. She knew it related to the experiencer being in mortal danger and called the hospital expecting death. Despite blood poisoning reaching the cellulite level, the experiencer staged an unexpected recovery, amazing the medical staff.
