On December 24, 1967, the experiencer entered the hospital at midnight in labor with respiratory distress. In the delivery room, she was given a facemask that impaired her breathing further. Due to Demerol, she couldn't speak up about the suffocating mask. When she tore it away, staff strapped her hands down and replaced the mask. As an atheist expecting permanent unconsciousness, she knew she was going to die from suffocation.
Instead of losing consciousness, she found herself surrounded by painfully loud noise like a giant freight train circling her head. She was acutely aware in a place of complete darkness where her hand before her eyes was invisible. She was alone in agony but had expanded knowledge - all mysteries of the universe made sense, and earthly importance seemed insignificant. She knew she would spend eternity alone in this dark, chaotic place without peace, and that she belonged there. Her mind posed the question: "What have you ever done in your life that was totally selfless?" Examining her life, she realized she had never done anything without selfish motive - no kind word or deed without personal gain. Feeling deep regret and remorse for never doing one selfless thing, her condition changed with this revelation. She came to with an IV (unusual for delivery patients then), packed in ice to stem severe bleeding. Her respiratory distress was completely gone. The terror of her experience and lack of terminology (before NDEs were known) kept her silent. Her universal knowledge slipped away immediately, leaving only the terrifying knowledge of a reality beyond life that was, for her, hell. The experience motivated her to search for life's meaning and spiritual reality. She purposed to do anonymous acts of kindness without selfish interest, which remains challenging forty years later. She developed lasting fear of childbirth and death.
