The experiencer went to a new OB/GYN after her regular doctor dismissed her complaint of leaking fluid as just a yeast infection. The new doctor confirmed her water had broken and sent her home on bed rest. On July 15th evening she was admitted to labor and delivery at a Richmond, Virginia hospital. After strong labor without dilation past 1.5cm and 24 hours of Pitocin with no progress, she became increasingly ill. She had been without food for over 68 hours, vomiting and contracting continuously. With blood pressure of 50/32 and heart rate 165+, she was left alone for over an hour in hypovolemic shock. As they started the oxygen mask in the OR, she heard a nurse say "She's crashing" and then left her body.
Suddenly everything was bright, clean white. Through a doorway, she saw her deceased fiancé (a sheriff's deputy killed months prior) wearing a white robe, kneeling with his right knee up. They communicated through eye contact without touching or speaking verbally. She also briefly saw her grandparents smiling at her with love. She watched the scene below with no emotion, seeing doctors opening her up and frantically working to get the child breathing. Her fiancé told her through eye communication "You can come now or go back. It's your choice" repeatedly. When she heard the child cry, she felt a jolt-type pain and panic. With the second cry, the pain was more intense. Despite wanting to stay, she felt the maternal pull and knew she had to come back. Five hours later she woke up and told a doctor and nurse about seeing where people were standing during surgery. The doctor said "How did you know that? There was a curtain up" and attributed it to lack of oxygen. The experience removed her fear of death and gave her lasting awareness that life can be scary but death is as simple as walking through a doorway. The feeling of sweet contentment from the experience still brings tears to her eyes.
