During a rock climbing trip to Mount Olympus in Greece, the experiencer and two friends lost their path and struggled for hours in heat without water. They decided to descend to reach the Ennipeas river with crystal clear frozen waters. After rappelling 25 meters to reach the river, they needed to swim across. Being a poor swimmer and frightened, the experiencer asked a friend for help crossing but began drowning, pulling the friend down while trying to surface.
When the second friend jumped in to help, the experiencer was pulling both people down in desperation. After approximately 2-3 minutes of struggle, having swallowed plenty of water, the experiencer reached a point of complete relaxation. All fear disappeared and was replaced by warmth and a beautiful feeling. Despite being aware of dying and sinking to the bottom of the deep river, there was no fear, only complete calmness. The experiencer's eyes were wide open, seeing sunlight coming through the surface while feeling beautiful. One friend finally pulled the experiencer out by the hair, with no pain felt during the rescue. Once safe, the experiencer couldn't stop crying and was in shock. The lasting impact was profound - the experiencer cannot forget the point where all terror vanished and was replaced by beauty and peace, even though drowning is normally a horrible way to die. This transformation from panic to complete calm at the threshold of death left a permanent impression.
