A three-year-old child was swimming with family all day when everyone decided to play volleyball. The child's floaties were removed and they were told they were too little to play. Deciding to continue swimming, the child felt as if the floaties were still on and took a big leap off the step as normal, immediately sinking. Despite screaming and struggling to get at least a hand above water for someone to see, the child blacked out. The mother later confirmed the child was likely in the pool at least five minutes, was pale and not breathing when pulled out.
The first memory after blacking out was being at the bottom of the pool, looking up from near their body. Next, they remember being carried out of the pool and seeing the rail while passing it. The following memory shows everyone huddled around while the edges of vision were blurred. The child distinctly remembers their brother screaming at their mother to do CPR while the mother was sobbing and saying she couldn't. The brother urged the mother to do what she knew how to do as a Labor and Delivery nurse. During the experience of being carried to the house, it felt like moving back into the body, crossing over a line or boundary. The child observed from the bottom of the pool looking up, saw the pool rail while being carried out despite being unconscious, and heard their brother screaming for CPR to be performed while the child was not breathing. The mother's specific CPR technique involved breathing and then beating on the back instead of chest compressions. The mother performed CPR with a breath followed by turning the child over and beating on the back until water was expelled and eyes opened. The child fought paramedics when being strapped down, then stayed overnight in the hospital but was fine. The mother confirmed all observed details including the brother's words, though the brother denies saying them. The experience was never discussed as a child.
