An eight-year-old child at a sleep-away camp in Sag Harbor, Long Island, was at a public beach with a strong rip tide when a wave knocked them down. Before recovery was possible, another wave dragged the child into the ocean. The ocean seemed to grip the child by the ankles and thrash them on the ocean floor repeatedly. After reaching the threshold for holding breath from prior experience with breath-holding games, the child needed to breathe but could not reach the surface. After moments of agonizing for air, all bodily sensations suddenly ceased.
The child entered a realm beyond space and time where consciousness remained fully intact despite the absence of bodily sensations. The experience was characterized by floating in peaceful euphoria while gravitating toward an incredibly bright light that was more brilliant than the sun yet viewable without harm. The light was alive, resembling translucent rainbow-sparkling snowflakes caught in sunlight but more magical because of its living quality. There was a sensation of warmth and love with a deep sense of connection comparable only to being a suckling infant in a mother's warm embrace. While floating in this nirvana, the realization came that breathing was no longer necessary, leading to the understanding that this was death. A conversation occurred with a higher entity described as a loving judge or "the source," where the child decided there was more work to do in this incarnation and chose to return. The bright light seamlessly transitioned to bluish-green movement as it became sunlight streaming through ocean water, and consciousness broke as the child rose to the surface. The ocean had expelled the child several hundred feet from the original shore location, already resuscitated with a stinging face from being dragged on the sandy ocean floor. No one had noticed the incident, providing no external validation for this intense experience. The child did not share this otherworldly experience for many years, finding it unsafe to discuss. Almost ten years later, while under psychedelic mushrooms, the NDE was recalled and recognized as having completely marked life's trajectory, influencing spirituality, interest in consciousness exploration, reverence for nature, and passion for environmental and social justice.
