The experiencer was critically ill in the ICU on a ventilator with Crohn's Disease that had rapidly deteriorated, resulting in a perforated large bowel. The family had been informed that survival was uncertain. During four weeks in the ICU, the experience occurred during what was described as either very late at night or in the early hours when a cardiac arrest occurred.
During the cardiac arrest, the person was suddenly standing upright feeling completely perfect, positioned at an edge between a gray area behind and a meadow spreading upward in front. The meadow was filled with beautiful poppy-type flowers that were fleshy in appearance like tulips, displaying colors never seen before that radiated warmth and energy. The scene evoked intense joy and a sense of perfect welcome. There was a powerful knowing that stepping into this meadow would bring true happiness, with goodness awaiting in the golden light. Just as the right leg moved forward to step into this realm, a female voice called out the person's name. The experience included a profound sense of warmth, welcome, and perfection in the otherworldly meadow. The flowers exhibited colors beyond earthly experience and radiated an energy that drew the observer forward. The golden light promised complete happiness and goodness. Upon hearing their name called, the person opened their eyes to find a medical team working on resuscitation efforts. Though disappointed to return, the person slowly recovered and left the ICU. The experience left lasting impressions: love is the most important thing in life, one should avoid the rat race, death is not to be feared though the dying process may involve pain, and the person now possesses knowledge that emerges spontaneously before conscious awareness.
