During childbirth with a 4.2 kg baby in the wrong position, the experiencer underwent a traumatic forceps delivery. At the moment the baby was pulled from her, she felt everything being pulled from her body - heart, lungs, everything from the neck down. It was the most terrible feeling she had ever experienced. She immediately found herself in complete darkness, weightless and floating, disoriented with no physical pain or discomfort.
She clearly remembers thinking "So this is what it feels like to die." She had the sensation of leaving her body and floating in deep outer space. Though she could still hear the voices of those in the labor room - her doctor, midwife, and husband - she couldn't see anything. The voices became progressively fainter and more distant as she felt drawn away from them toward something unseen. She felt anxious, not knowing what was happening, but believed she had died during childbirth. Her husband began calling her name repeatedly, refusing to give up until he got a response. His voice started very faint and distant but grew louder as the process reversed. She was no longer being pulled away but gravitating back toward her husband's voice. She opened her eyes to see her husband looking at her. When she told him about the experience and asked how she looked during that time, he said she looked "terrible, very unwell." She asked if her heart had stopped, but it hadn't. She remains uncertain whether this was a true near-death experience or if she was passing out from the extreme trauma of the delivery. The experience left her with questions about the nature of what happened during that traumatic birth.
