As a child, the experiencer held their breath to prove a point during an argument. After feeling their body drop to the floor, they rose and hovered at the ceiling, observing their sister and mother place their body on the bed. They felt a tug and went upward with their spiritual eyes squeezed tightly shut from fear. Feeling a slight wind on their spiritual cheek, they slowly opened their eyes to find themselves in dimness, sensing other spirits rising or falling at different rates around them.
Above was a light that drew them closer. They stopped at the edge and slowly extended their hand, stepping through into a beautiful realm. They found themselves in a green field with a river flowing in the distance, trees lining the banks, and a dirt path alongside a four-foot cobblestone wall that followed the path to the horizon. They heard children laughing at play, and saw them cresting a small hill, playing with a checkered ball, each taking turns to kick it and run. The experiencer wanted to join them. Steps appeared at the wall when they thought about joining. At the topmost step, a person surrounded by clouds asked telepathically, "Do you know who these children are?" Through thought alone, they instantly knew these were all children who had died young - aborted, died in childbirth, from accidents or illnesses. The voice warned that stepping over meant no return. Initially not caring about returning, they shrugged, ready to join the eternal play. At that moment, an image of their sister appeared in their mind - kneeling beside the body with tears streaming down her face, praying and begging God to let them come back and be alive again. Not wanting their sister to hurt, they chose to return. The voice said "You have chosen well," and instantly they were pulled back into their body, sitting up and hugging their sister. They could repeat their sister's exact prayer words. The sister confirmed she had held a mirror to their nose with no breath for five minutes. Their mother dismissed it as imagination, and the experience distressed the sister so much they rarely discuss it.
