At age 19, Matt was a college sophomore suffering from multiple illnesses including lung infection and bronchitis. Before returning to school, he had a mysterious encounter with a priest in an old prison-turned-gallery - a figure who disappeared when his friends approached. Upon returning to college, his condition severely worsened. Friends found him unresponsive on Saturday evening with a 105-degree fever, soaked in sweat. Paramedics said he would have died had they waited longer. He was packed in ice and rushed to the hospital where he underwent spinal taps and numerous tests. He experienced respiratory arrest and received a tracheotomy, feeding tube, and central line before falling into a coma lasting over three weeks in ICU.
During the coma, Matt had an out-of-body experience where he could see himself lying in bed with doctors, nurses, and his parents around him. He could describe in great detail a room he had never physically seen, though he was later moved to a room with a window. He observed all his tubes and could see people's facial expressions. In his NDE, he found himself in a wheelchair wearing a priest's white robe with a cross, surrounded by others dressed similarly in the brightest white imaginable. The inability to speak and being in a wheelchair made sense later, as he awoke completely paralyzed from the neck down with a tracheotomy preventing speech. The same priest from the prison kept asking "Matt, what do you want to do?" When Matt couldn't answer, the priest said they were having a vote. The vote didn't pass, and the priest told him it wasn't his time and he'd have another chance later. Matt recognized the priest as his deceased next-door neighbor who had died when Matt was 10, falling from a ladder while cutting tree branches. After awakening from the coma, Matt was completely paralyzed and unable to speak, matching his wheelchair-bound, mute state in the NDE. The experience opened his eyes to out-of-body and near-death experiences, leading him to speak to groups about not taking life for granted. He feels he became a much better person through this transformative experience.
