The experiencer had two distinct near-death experiences in his life. The first occurred at age 13 during surgery with ether anesthesia. He found himself flat on his back, speeding through a tunnel filled with beautiful colored lights on the walls. At the end of the tunnel was an incredibly bright light, brighter than the sun, yet it didn't hurt to look at it. As he approached closer to the light, he suddenly woke up about a week later, having apparently passed out while still in the tunnel.
The second experience happened at age 61 in 2002, caused by a lithium overdose due to the VA hospital not properly monitoring his lithium levels. This time he had two distinct visions, though he was uncertain if they were connected or separate events. In the first vision, he saw himself as a two-year-old baby boy floating in a beautiful blue sky, completely happy and carefree. Sunshine created rainbow colors through the sky, and he watched eagles flying overhead. Filled with joy, he flapped his arms trying to fly up and touch the eagles, though he never reached them. In the second vision, he found himself in darkness as black as coal, still appearing as the same two-year-old boy. Despite the darkness, he felt the same freedom and happiness. He saw a bright star high in the sky and began pushing himself upward with his feet through the thick darkness, extending his right arm with index finger pointed to touch the star. In both experiences at age 61, everything disappeared before he could reach his goal - neither touching the eagles nor the star. The consistent themes across all experiences were movement toward light or celestial objects, profound happiness and freedom, and a return to childlike innocence during the life-threatening lithium overdose.
