In 2002, the experiencer was thrown from a horse, breaking their back in six places and suffering a concussion. They were brought to the hospital and given iodine for a CAT scan. Unknown to them at the time, they had an allergic reaction to the iodine which caused their heart to stop while inside the CAT scan machine. This created the life-threatening medical emergency that precipitated their near-death experience.
The experiencer's pain suddenly stopped and they heard the bell ringing with hospital personnel calling "code blue, code blue." Initially thinking someone else had died and that staff would leave them alone to attend to that person, they then emerged from the CAT scan tunnel and saw multiple people running toward them. Remarkably, they observed this scene from above, looking down at the medical team. Only then did they realize they had died. Upon realizing their death, they immediately thought about the white light and tunnel they had heard about. As soon as they had this thought, they saw both the light and tunnel, which appeared golden in color. They walked into the tunnel, which seemed to become progressively narrower, feeling as if they were shrinking. At the apex of the tunnel stood an angel dressed in white who waved them back, indicating they should return. At that precise moment, hospital personnel administered a shot of adrenaline directly into their heart. They felt themselves "pop" back into their body, immediately experiencing the pain of their broken bones again. Upon opening their eyes, the nurses said "you scared us, we thought we lost you for good." This suggests the medical team had been working intensively to resuscitate them and were genuinely concerned about losing the patient permanently.
