The experiencer was an accomplished long-distance cyclist who, on August 5th, forgot to wear their helmet while riding home from summer classes. They were struck by a drunk driver with a blood alcohol level of 0.52 - over five times the legal limit - who was already being followed by three patrol cars. The impact threw them 300 feet, with such force that their clothes were ripped from their body. They suffered five multiple fractures of the left femur, three fractures of the right hip, and massive internal bleeding.
During one of three clinical deaths while comatose, the experiencer found themselves in a large tunnel described as miles wide and long with a misty white light at the end. They felt profound peace and did not want to leave. A presence was with them, and they communicated telepathically without spoken words. When asked "Are you ready to die now?" they were able to see their fiancée crying in the waiting room. This observation of their fiancée prompted their response: "No! She needs me!" after which they returned to their body. The experiencer remarkably observed medical procedures while their heart had stopped. They saw blood flowing from their chest to the bed to the floor and witnessed nurses rushing in after their heart stopped and triggered an alarm at the nurses station. Medical staff later could not understand how they were able to "see" these events after cardiac arrest. They were clinically dead three times during their 22-day coma, with lungs 92% filled with pulmonary emboli from bone marrow. The experience had lasting effects, spending four and a half months in ICU, receiving over 200 shots of Heparin and 66 units of blood transfusions. They spent three years in and out of hospitals with permanent disabilities including arthritis, bursitis, and heel spurs. Despite the trauma, they found meaning in survival and eventually overcame bitterness toward the drunk driver who received only 10 days in jail despite killing an eight-year-old girl two years earlier.
