An eight-year-old girl playing alone near her house became trapped in an industrial freezer when the door locked behind her. In pitch black darkness with musty smell, she couldn't open the door and became frightened, slumping in the back corner. She quickly struggled to breathe with tightening chest, believing she would die. She placed her head down preparing for death.
She then found herself outside her body above the porch, looking down at her father. She could clearly hear both parents' voices. Her father asked "Where is Jane?" and her mother replied "Outside playing." When he asked "Where?" and came outside looking, she was high above the porch viewing the entire backyard and closed freezer. She willed her father to find her, thinking intensely "Please find me." Her father noticed the freezer door shut, ran to it, and pulled her out unconscious. He carried her to the kitchen where she took her first full breath. She was confused and shocked, later resting on her parents' bed. Her father immediately removed the freezer door. The incident was never discussed with her parents. The experience created lasting trauma including suffocation fears, panic when locked in rooms, deep water phobia, and severe death anxiety, especially at night. After therapy at age 59, her sleep improved and death fear diminished.
