On October 23, 2015, Deanne collapsed at home from massive pulmonary embolisms five weeks after knee replacement surgery. She coded upon ambulance arrival at the hospital emergency and three more times after. ICU staff worked on her for 95 minutes, preparing to call time of death when a doctor found a faint pulse she maintained. She spent 7 days in ICU and 7 more in rehabilitation.
During the experience, she was in complete darkness with a man in white standing beside her. At the darkness's end was a bright circle of light with people milling around living normal lives, reminding her of a hallway nightlight from childhood. Initially believing she was kidnapped by a Klingon on a spaceship, she felt crushing despair at never seeing family again. The man placed his hand on her arm as his face clarified - long stringy brown hair with the blackest eyes. Without moving his mouth, he communicated: "You have to fight, Deanne. We'll take care of you." She woke intubated in ICU with husband and son present. Two months later, watching a documentary about Jesus using 3D reproduction from the Shroud of Turin, she recognized the figure as matching exactly. She realized she hadn't just died but was taken to heaven's gates where Jesus comforted her, letting her choose based on her heart's despair about leaving family.
