Freddy, who has lived with a spinal cord injury for 20 years, underwent a painful video urodynamic testing procedure at a hospital. The procedure involved catheter insertions without numbing, causing excruciating pain. When the nurse ripped off medical tape and removed the catheter, the overwhelming pain caused him to lose consciousness from neurocardiogenic syncope. As he fainted, he experienced a vivid vision of being in a 1950s-style house with green walls and children playing happily on the floor. He felt peaceful until a white blur grew and he was pulled back to reality. Medical staff were tapping his chest saying "Stay with me" as his heart rate showed 24 bpm on the monitor, slowly rising. The staff mentioned "crash cart" and kept him under observation. The experience felt like being in a simpler, more peaceful time and place. Though distressing in its medical context, the vision itself brought him peace and wonder about what might await at life's end.
