In January 2025, Todd was beginning his second round of palliative chemotherapy for stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer. After steroids and anti-nausea medications were given via IV, Docetaxel chemotherapy was administered. Within 3-4 minutes of the flow commencing, he sensed something was wrong and alerted a nurse who quickly removed the IV. A nursing team of 4-5 people began working on him and administered an antidote for the allergic reaction.
During the critical period between IV removal and the antidote taking effect, Todd felt himself being pulled away from his body with an overwhelming sensation. He experienced a physical sensation of being pulled from behind his body by his chest and shoulders. His vision and spatial awareness narrowed to focus only on the small area directly in front of him. Though mentally clear-headed and aware of staff working on him, moving his body to a reclining position, and talking to him, he was physically unable to respond despite his mind telling him to answer. The key veridical observation was his conscious awareness of the medical team's specific actions while unable to physically respond: he observed them performing sternum rubs, moving his body position, and speaking to him. He maintained extreme clarity of sight and hearing of events happening directly in front of him, though his peripheral vision and hearing were limited. He described feeling the weight of someone performing sternum rubs and being aware of the team's movements. When the antidote took hold, his spatial awareness expanded, peripheral vision returned, and he could hear throughout the room. He later described the experience as stepping into the doorway of the other side without venturing further down the path. The experience led him to seek Christian knowledge and contemplate spiritual matters more deeply.
