At age 14, Caitlin was severely assaulted by her 18-year-old ex-boyfriend at 3am after breaking up with him due to his violent behavior toward others. He had previously assaulted her best friend and his mother, resulting in jail time. When he came to her house after his release, she was struck in the head and beaten for approximately 10 minutes in a life-threatening attack.
After the first blow to her head, Caitlin immediately felt herself slip out of her body and shoot 30 feet into the air. From a position above the street light, she watched her ex-boyfriend continue beating her body below for the remaining 10 minutes of the assault. During this out-of-body state, she experienced neither pleasant nor distressing emotions, instead feeling very present and aware. She consciously thought "This is unfortunate that this had to happen" while observing the violence from above. The experience left her with a changed perspective on human consciousness and connection. She realized humans are souls with personalities rather than just bodies, understanding that something mystical forms the canvas of existence. This revelation internalized into every cell of her being, leaving her with unshakeable knowledge of this truth. Following the experience, Caitlin developed increased body awareness and appreciation for physical existence. She felt more connected to whatever makes humans alive or dead, which she identifies as God. The near-death experience fundamentally altered her understanding of human nature and spirituality, confirming her belief in universal human connection.
