Brent was a rear seat passenger in a head-on collision at 60mph where both drivers died at the scene. He sustained a broken femur and severe head injury but remained conscious throughout. He could feel the broken bone ends when trying to move and had glass shards in his eyes from the other vehicle. As emergency personnel arrived, he began going into shock with tingling and shivering, resisting losing consciousness fearing it might be his last breath.
During this critical state, Brent found himself standing in an infinite golden sand desert under a clear blue sky with no sun or clouds. The desert extended endlessly in all directions, and he intuitively knew it had no boundaries. He felt overwhelming loneliness, realizing that at death's door he was completely alone - even if others held his hand, death was a journey he must make by himself. The experience had a purgatory-like quality to him. After what felt like minutes in the desert vision, though uncertain of real time duration, Brent returned to awareness in the crashed vehicle. Emergency services transported him to the hospital where he recovered from his injuries. The experience taught him the absolute solitude of death's threshold. Despite others' proximity, dying remains a solitary passage. This vision of infinite desert and complete aloneness left a lasting impression about the fundamental isolation of the death experience, remaining vivid in his memory for 30 years.
