During a high school football game, Kelly suffered a severe injury that ruptured his spleen when his rib cut it in half. Despite the severity, he remained at the game until the end before his father took him to the emergency room instead of letting him go home. By the time he arrived at the hospital, over two-thirds of his blood had pooled in his stomach cavity, and doctors said he would have died if he had been 30 minutes later. In the operating room before and possibly during surgery, Kelly experienced floating above his body at the ceiling, looking down and trying to communicate with the nurses. He heard them scrambling and yelling "He's in shock!" before finding himself immersed in the whitest, most brilliant light he had ever experienced. Within this light, he felt the most loving, caring, and peaceful feeling he had ever encountered, even to this day. Despite having just turned 17 and initially not wanting to die, once in the light he didn't want to leave and return to his body. The experience fundamentally changed his understanding of death and consciousness, providing him comfort in dealing with the loss of loved ones throughout his life. He describes the love experienced in that realm as something that doesn't exist on Earth in the same form.
