Kerry, a college freshman, experienced supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in April 2006 after consuming extra espresso on an empty stomach. Her heart rate reached 240 beats per minute, and EMTs administered medication to restart her heart. She watched the monitor go from 240 to 200 to 100 to 50, then briefly flatlined. During clinical death, Kerry experienced multiple simultaneous perspectives - she was everywhere in the room and aware of everything at all angles, seeing left, right, front, back, and bottom of objects and people simultaneously. She began passing through a tunnel toward a very bright light, feeling she was traveling to heaven. She heard whispers that weren't from people in the physical room while remaining aware of actual conversations. The experience included incredible peace, joy, and unity with the universe. She was moving forward with energy toward the light when the forward movement stopped and she was returned to her body. While unconscious, she accurately heard and later recalled someone on the phone relaying her condition to her mother in South Korea. The experience transformed her from devout Catholic to more broadly spiritual, giving her certainty about souls, afterlife, and a higher power. She recalls a similar experience from infancy, suggesting souls may enter bodies during early life. A few months later, she had successful cardiac ablation to resolve the SVT.
