Joseph experienced a life-threatening bicycle accident in September 2000, the summer before third grade. From his elevated perspective, Joseph felt no discomfort and was simply observing, noting bright white light around the edges of his view. He could hear himself crying and his friend consoling him as if hearing it normally, though his sight was from outside his body. His friend later verified this exact scenario of Joseph sobbing while being helped back with their bikes. Joseph woke up on the couch at his friend's house before being taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed brain trauma with hemorrhage. The experience left him with heightened intuition and sensitivity that he felt protected him throughout life, though recovery took about 7 years with physical therapy and dealing with traumatic brain injury symptoms.
