Jose was a cadet at the Philippine Military Academy when he was electrocuted by a 3.3 kilovolt high-tension wire that had severed due to high winds in May 1982. After his exam, he was following a fellow cadet when the accident occurred. During his unconscious state, he experienced a vivid journey beginning with ascending a rocky road where a black-hooded faceless being repeatedly asked him to accompany it. Jose refused and challenged the being to a rock-breaking contest, winning his freedom. He then found himself with three other men atop clouds surrounding a hole showing bright blue sky, with a stairway missing its fourth step leading down. When told he must descend or remain there forever, he stepped down and found himself running through a road lined with tall golden-yellow grass toward a big round light. Upon reaching the light, he awoke in the emergency room looking at the round emergency light, with the Commandant asking him what happened. A plumber who had been following him on the walkway had saved his life. The experience left Jose with lasting spiritual changes, initially causing him to lose faith in God due to his injuries, but later experiencing a profound reconciliation with faith on his 20th birthday.
