Jonathon, a firefighter/paramedic, experienced a myocardial infarction during an ice hockey game, resulting in cardiac arrest with 99% LAD occlusion (widow-maker). He has no memory of the event day - from preparing his children for school through playing hockey until waking in the hospital. Colleagues reported he felt unwell, went to the locker room where another player found him with agonal respirations. CPR was started, he was defibrillated 5 times, went pulseless 3 times, and briefly became combative before losing pulse again. Six months later, during EMDR therapy for trauma processing, Jonathon recovered memories of his NDE. Using auditory bilateral stimulation, he progressively recalled: seeing himself on the locker room floor from above his colleagues' shoulders watching CPR being performed; observing firefighters arrive and load him onto a stretcher with defibrillation pads attached; his hands involuntarily clenching into fists as he watched himself combating rescuers while being loaded into the ambulance; then experiencing floating in bright light with air rushing over him for 60 seconds, feeling separated from the therapist's office despite physically remaining in the chair. The experience felt completely real and present, not like normal memory recall. The therapist validated these as legitimate memories being reprocessed by his brain. The vividness and embodied nature of the experience during EMDR - particularly the involuntary physical responses and sensation of floating in light - convinced Jonathon of its reality as an actual NDE rather than imagination.
