John experienced cardiac arrest after consuming excessive alcohol and pills at a party. His girlfriend drove him home where he lost consciousness and went into ventricular arrhythmia. Suddenly, he found himself out of body, floating above the city streets, observing cars, people, and stoplights that held no meaning for him. He experienced pure bliss, freedom, and peace with no thoughts or pain - feeling as if he had always existed this way. He perceived being in an invisible gulf or tube-like barrier between himself and Earth, like clear glass that couldn't be seen but was known to be there. He was drawn westward toward a portal of light, knowing instinctively this was his destination but understanding that passing through meant no return. The light was indescribable, beyond human language - not a city but a gulf-like portal to somewhere else. Throughout the experience, he felt no fear, had no thoughts, only a knowing of oneness and that he had always existed. He encountered no beings or voices but knew where to go. As he approached the point of no return, he suddenly returned to his body, surrounded by paramedics who had resuscitated him from cardiac arrest. He spent several days in hospital observation. John kept this experience secret for twenty years, finding it difficult to describe in words and fearing disbelief.
