Jeff had an implanted cardiac device and was on medication for atrial fibrillation. While sitting home alone, his heart went into ventricular fibrillation and he fell unconscious. The first shock from his implanted device failed to resuscitate him, leading to clinical death. During this time between the first and second shock, he experienced a brief but profound NDE.
He found himself floating in a large bubble-like environment, perceiving both light and darkness simultaneously. The light grew increasingly vivid as he moved through what seemed to be a tunnel. At approximately 20 seconds into the experience, he observed beings approaching him. Before any further interaction could occur, his device delivered a second shock that successfully resuscitated him. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital for three days of observation. The experience left him somewhat scared initially, as he moved through the bubble enclosure and tunnel toward an unusually bright, unearthly light. The environment was clearly mystical and otherworldly. Though brief, the encounter was vivid and real, providing him hope for a better afterlife despite not including typical NDE elements like life review or messages of love. Following the experience, Jeff maintained his Jewish faith without changes to religious practices. However, the event gave him certainty that the experience was real and meaningful, providing comfort about what awaits after death. The NDE has always fascinated him as a subject, and this personal experience confirmed his interest and beliefs about consciousness surviving bodily death.
