Jane experienced severe childbirth complications with uncontrolled blood pressure, 28 hours of extended labor, exhaustion, and a stuck baby. The doctor told her husband the odds were 60 to 1 against her and/or the baby's survival. During the crisis, she found herself at ceiling level in a corner of the room as a dispassionate onlooker feeling no pain.
From her elevated perspective, she watched her husband helping the doctor and two nurses turn her body onto one side to insert a spinal block before rushing her to theatre on a trolley. She felt a serenity she had only experienced once before during a childhood near-drowning. When all hope is gone, the world becomes peaceful, quiet, and vision becomes very clear. She returned to her body when reaching the theatre door. The most significant observation was watching the medical team of four people (husband, doctor, two nurses) working on her body to insert the spinal block and transfer her to the trolley. She observed this as a calm, detached observer from the ceiling corner while her body was in critical condition below. The experience gave her encompassing calmness, serenity, and warmth. She felt incredible peace and happiness with a sense of unity with the world. Jane immediately told her husband upon regaining consciousness two days later, but he gave her a strange look. She had no doubt it was real and kept the knowledge between them. The experience left her grateful for life and without fear of death. She noted this was similar to her childhood drowning experience where struggling ceased and remarkable peace emerged with heightened clarity of vision as light played through the water.
