Nine-year-old James was camping with his aunt, uncle, and sisters during a hot Georgia summer. His aunt and uncle were heavy drinkers who didn't adequately supervise the children in the water. Being a fairly good swimmer for his age, James ventured too far out and couldn't touch the bottom. He attempted to conserve energy by going down to bounce up but couldn't reach the bottom and ran out of breath.
Despite tremendous struggling to reach the surface, he went under about four feet and couldn't break through even when reaching his right arm up. In his panic and strong feeling of drowning, everything suddenly went completely black. It wasn't a scary darkness but an enveloping blackness that gave him calm and reassurance. His body stopped struggling while his mind remained totally aware of everything. Strangely, he wondered how long it would take them to find his body. He realized he could think perfectly fine despite being unconscious, remaining extremely aware. He felt total peace, calm, and complete acceptance of having drowned. Though only nine years old, he thought it "kinda sucks" but was otherwise unbothered. During what felt like several minutes in this peaceful darkness, he thought about what would happen to his family. He was suddenly brought to the surface, possibly by his oldest sister who always worried he would drown, though she never mentioned it and no one seemed to notice what happened. He immediately left the water, coughing up water and collapsing from exhaustion in the sand. His aunt and uncle knew nothing of the incident. He didn't tell anyone for fear of punishment and not being allowed back in the water. He experienced the same profound peace he would later feel during a childbirth NDE - once struggling stops, remarkable peace and acceptance emerge.
