James had recently relocated to Los Angeles when he experienced a severe shower accident. While showering before work, he slipped and threw his arms out to break his fall. His right arm violently struck the sliding glass shower door, shattering it into sharp shards. He fell onto a protruding shard that penetrated under his right armpit, severing his brachial artery. He witnessed his artery pumping blood all over the bathroom in complete panic, screaming to his wife that he was going to die.
He managed to grab the pulsing artery with his left hand and apply pressure before losing consciousness from severe blood loss. His wife called an ambulance and EMTs had to rip out the shower doors to reach him. He was rushed to the hospital where he was clinically dead and required resuscitation. During the time he was dead, he experienced a profound NDE that he didn't understand until years later. While clinically dead, he perceived a bright pinhole of light in the distance that gradually grew larger until it seemed to be everywhere. The light created an overwhelming sense that all would be well. The utter panic he had felt watching his blood spurt disappeared completely. The light gave him a wonderful, reassuring sensation that was difficult to describe - a feeling of complete peace and assurance. He heard nothing during the experience, only felt the profound comfort of the light. The accident left him with permanent disability - limited use of his right arm and hand due to severed nerves. He also contracted hepatitis C from blood transfusions (blood wasn't screened in 1973), discovered in 1998. Despite these adversities and feeling singled out for trouble, he believes his NDE gave him the strength to withstand these challenges. The experience showed him that mortal existence isn't the end.
