Hildred underwent what was supposed to be a simple hysterectomy but experienced a fatal allergic reaction to the anesthetic. Her husband was also hospitalized with a stroke at the same time, creating additional stress. No family members were waiting when she came out of surgery, so no one was informed she had been taken to the ICU.
During the experience, she found herself in a small room lying on a cart with a doctor in khakis and a corpsman in whites attending to her. She was floating above them, observing from an elevated perspective while feeling very calm. The doctor was extremely upset and was ordering the corpsman to get him things. She felt sorry for them and kept thinking "Oh, don't worry. It's okay." She witnessed the doctor say he had to give her a shot in the heart, which he apparently did. The most significant observations were seeing the specific medical personnel (doctor in khakis, corpsman in whites), witnessing their emotional distress, and hearing the doctor say he needed to give her a heart injection. She observed all this from above with complete calm while the medical team worked frantically below. After the heart injection, she felt very peaceful and began moving forward toward a light, really wanting to go and not stop. She didn't discuss the experience for years, thinking it was a dream. The doctor only told her she had "a hard time after surgery" and to ensure the medication was marked in red on her chart. The ICU stay was never documented in her medical records. Years later when preparing for bunion surgery, her nurse daughter investigated and discovered the medication is no longer used. The experience eliminated her fear of death.
