Grahame was doing an intense group cross-fit workout when he experienced cardiac arrest. Unable to catch his breath, he asked trainers to call 911 before collapsing. There was no AED (automated external defibrillator) available in the gym. He received CPR for 7-8 minutes from bystanders before first responders arrived with an AED. The shock from the defibrillator brought him back into his body, after which everything went extremely black. He was later diagnosed with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy deemed idiopathic (of unknown cause).
During his cardiac arrest, Grahame felt outside his body and could see people trying to help him and perform CPR. He was not afraid and was fully aware he was outside his body, alert and conscious of his non-physical state. Everything seemed to be happening slowly while he observed from this detached perspective. He saw a distant, far-off light during the experience. The observation felt more real than real life, with heightened senses immediately upon being shocked back into his body. The most profound aspect was the incredible peace and calm he felt during the event, being at one with the world despite the medical crisis. He described experiencing the darkest black he had ever seen after returning to his body. In retrospect, the experience is scary to contemplate, but at the time he felt only peace. Since then, dealing with the emotional journey has been challenging. The experience led to large life changes including becoming far more caring, patient, sympathetic, and emotional. Grahame developed a much stronger appreciation for love, life as a gift, and respect for fellow humans, though also a strong fear of losing his family. He became much more curious about spiritual matters and transitioned from unknown religious views to Protestant Christianity.
