Gary was 8 years old at a local pool with his mother when tragedy struck. Unable to swim and restricted to the shallow end, he got out and walked toward his mother at the deep end. While looking into the water, other children running around the pool pushed him in. He struggled desperately to call for his mother and grab the edge but couldn't. Someone eventually dove in and pulled him from the bottom of the pool. He was clinically dead and received CPR from paramedics—one doing breaths while another performed chest compressions. He was in a coma for 10 days afterward and should have been brain dead, but miraculously recovered.
During his clinical death, Gary floated above his body looking down on everyone—the other kids, his mother, her friend, and the paramedics. He saw his mother and her friend crying and talking, though he couldn't make out their words. He witnessed the paramedics performing CPR with one EMT doing breaths and another pushing on his chest. A yellowish, golden light surrounded him as he floated upward, still observing himself below. He then turned toward a bright white light and began heading toward it through what he describes as a golden/yellow aura followed by a blinding white light tunnel. At the crucial moment, Gary heard a deep voice say "It's not your time." Before he could respond, he was instantly back in his body taking a gasp of air. The experience left him with profound knowledge of the afterlife and eliminated his fear of death. The voice and the phrase "It's not your time" matched what many other NDErs report, validating his experience as genuine rather than imagined. Upon waking from his coma, Gary told his mother he could see she had been upset and described exactly where she was kneeling and where everyone was positioned relative to his body during the resuscitation. His mother dismissed it as silly, and they never discussed it again. He didn't share the experience for 30 years due to fear of being called crazy.
