Fabian experienced an NDE at age 4-5 in kindergarten in Quito when another child accidentally collided with him during play, causing a violent head impact. He went home with nausea and severe headache, and his mother's cousin insisted he be taken to the doctor immediately. During the frantic car ride, he was told not to fall asleep. He was diagnosed with a concussion and slept for an entire week at home while recovering, though he has no memory of that recovery period except for his remarkable NDE.
Fabian awoke in a pitch-black space much wider than his bedroom, bounded only by darkness like a moonless, starless night. Despite the strange setting, he felt secure, comfortable, and curious rather than afraid. A bluish-greenish light formed a tunnel with a slow-moving, uneven vortex that emitted a murmur of many voices. When he focused on it, the sound intensified almost deafeningly, but he found he could control its volume. The tunnel drew nearer and he felt complete harmony, warmth, and welcome. Four dark silhouetted figures appeared before him, blocking the light. Two radiated motherly love, one seemed deeply caring (possibly his father), and the fourth had a protective, authoritative aura (possibly the doctor). Throughout, he tried interpreting everything through his child's mind while recognizing he was in an eternal, magnificent realm of all-encompassing love that felt unmistakably familiar—it was home. A deep, powerful voice without specific source, perhaps from the light itself, began speaking in a message without words or language that he could understand. The voice told him about life being an opportunity to learn and be kind, to share rather than accumulate wealth, to care for nature, not to fear death or suffering as they are temporary, and that all are part of a compassionate, forgiving unity. He was told to embrace laughter, artistry, travel, and change. He didn't want to return, but the voice said he had to go back to take care of two of the figures. Thinking as a child that adults would take care of him, he agreed to return. Afterward, young Fabian asked his mother about visitors during his sleep and whether his grandfather had come, which made her suspicious. He found no electric lamp in the garden that could explain the light. The experience gave him enhanced sensitivity to emotions, deeper interactions with children, and improved intuition, though it also brought sleeplessness and distress from violence.
