In 2016, Errol experimented with IV opiates for the first and last time, before widespread fentanyl contamination. After injection, he initially felt fine but then experienced respiratory arrest. His friends threw him in cold water and attempted resuscitation before paramedics arrived. He was not breathing for an estimated 10-15 minutes, turning cyanotic. His friend saved his life by performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while waiting for paramedics who administered Narcan.
During his clinical death, Errol found himself in a vast darkness that felt like standing in a dark room, though he had no sense of having a body. The space was peaceful with no fear and no memory of what had transpired. He existed in pure consciousness without recollection of his life, feeling as if his eyes were open but without needing to blink. An overwhelming peace pervaded the experience. Suddenly, rainbow-colored lips appeared like someone kissing glass from the other side, glowing with every color of the rainbow. Before each disappearance, a shower of rainbow colors would blow in a swirling pattern from the edges. This apparition appeared 4-5 times, matching the number of rescue breaths his friend gave him. Errol later realized the rainbow lips were his friend's lips pressing against his during resuscitation, with the shower of colors representing each life-saving breath. He could see these colors more vividly than normal vision, comparing all earthly colors to these brilliant rainbow hues even now. The darkness felt familiar and reassuring, described as light despite being dark. He questioned "What is that?" and "Where am I?" before being resuscitated. The experience permanently changed him, eliminating his fear of death and creating an aversion to drug experimentation. He recognized there is something after death and has never forgotten the darkness and the colors of the breath of life. Despite previous experimentation with hallucinogens, he emphasizes this was incomparably real, not a drug-induced hallucination.
