Darren was recovering in ICU from double-bypass heart surgery when he went into ventricular fibrillation. He was unconscious and had no memory of the resuscitation efforts. The medical team performed CPR and used a defibrillator at his father's urging because Darren suffered from tachycardia.
During his unconscious state, Darren experienced a remarkable life review that occurred all at once, not chronologically. He experienced every event from his entire life simultaneously, but with a unique perspective - he felt everything from the viewpoint of the other person he was interacting with. He experienced how his words and actions affected others, feeling their emotions and reactions. The review was completely dispassionate, neither frightening nor happy, but rather an objective assessment of his life in minute detail. The flood of memories was interrupted partway through and instantly ceased, as if someone had hit an off button. The most significant aspect was experiencing interactions from others' perspectives. Darren initially considered whether this might be cerebral hypoxia, but realized that hypoxia would have shown events from his own viewpoint, not from others'. He could feel exactly what other people felt during his past interactions with them. After regaining consciousness, he couldn't recall specific events despite the incredible detail experienced during the review. The experience led to significant spiritual changes. Darren converted from Buddhism to Christianity, believing the life review indicated God's existence and plan. He became more thoughtful in his relationships, particularly with his wife. The experience taught him that how we treat others is incredibly important, serving as a wake-up call to be less selfish and love others more.
