Debby, 15, had an allergic reaction to sodium pentothal during tonsil surgery, going into respiratory arrest. Her ears rang loudly before being sucked backward through a dark tunnel at light speed. She floated in consciousness, seeing vignettes of her life like stage plays below. She was pulled upward toward the stars and galaxy, feeling one with the universe. She sensed an invisible silver thread connecting her to Earth and realized if she continued, the connection would break. Not ready to leave family, she forcefully thought "I'm Debby" repeatedly to stop her ascent and was slammed back into her body in terrible pain. The experience eliminated her fear of death.
