At 18 months old, Susan was hospitalized for three months with spinal meningitis and double pneumonia. Her family was told to pick funeral clothing as she wouldn't survive the night, but they prayed all night and she miraculously recovered. During her illness, Susan floated above her body then found herself on the floor looking up at her crib. A lady in white emanating brilliant light appeared and hid her from Death, who appeared as a figure in a black robe searching for her. The lady said "He is death and he is looking for you; but he can't take you if he doesn't see you." After Death left, she lifted Susan saying "It is not your time" and placed her back in her body. The next morning, X-rays showed nothing wrong and doctors called her a walking miracle. Days later at home, Susan's mother saw her reach up smiling in her sleep then wail when woken, saying Jesus had come but said it wasn't her time. Susan developed near-photographic memory, could read and write early, and sang in Aramaic about "the Lady of the Sea" according to their priest. She gained ESP abilities, sensing when people would die and seeing spirits. The experience left her feeling constantly watched over and protected throughout life.
