Sterling experienced severe breathing difficulties and was rushed to the ER on New Year's Day 2019 after coughing up blood. He went into cardiac arrest with full pulmonary embolisms in both lungs and was resuscitated after 44 minutes, then placed in a medically induced coma for 11 days. During his cardiac arrest, he observed his body from the corner of the emergency room ceiling, watching staff work to resuscitate him without recognizing himself or feeling any urgency. He then rose rapidly until Earth became a tiny prick of light and entered a brilliant light that enveloped him. There he met his deceased father who told him it wasn't his time yet and that his daughters and grandchildren still needed him. They walked together in a crystalline park-like setting where everything emitted joy and light, conversing telepathically for what seemed like a week and a half. His father explained his work on Earth wasn't complete before sending him back. Sterling awoke after 11 days with diminished lung capacity and dead heart tissue but gained the ability to sense spirit presences. The experience eliminated his fear of death and strengthened his spiritual awareness.
