Steelley was working on a friend's car when it fell off the jack onto his chest and arms, trapping him for 90-120 seconds until he lost consciousness. During unconsciousness, he experienced a profound out-of-body state where he watched his friends lift the car and drag him out. He saw his life from infancy with forgotten memories and witnessed future visions of his children grown up and his wife with another man. He felt completely at peace with death and eternity in heaven, surrounded by an aura around his memories and visions. After being life-flighted to the trauma center, he spent 7 hours there with no immediate physical issues but was later diagnosed with acute stress syndrome and PTSD. The veridical elements include his observation of his friends' rescue efforts from above his body and specific details about their actions while he was unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, his friend had slapped his face and given him water, confirming the physical events. The experience left him with altered perceptions about death, feeling it as natural and not to be feared, though he struggled with PTSD afterward.
