Simona V, age 11, experienced a near-death event in 1976 while playing in an apartment pool in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Unable to swim and sensitive to cold, she had resisted swimming lessons. On this warm day, she and her brother played in the shallow end before she attempted to walk toward the deep end on tiptoes. She suddenly became submerged, watching the blue sky disappear. Initial panic and terror led to disconnected thrashing movements as she pleaded "How do I escape?" Then, like a light switching on, everything transformed from despair to complete bliss. She witnessed a brilliant sphere of light filled with sparkling colors and purity that defied description. All fear vanished, her body relaxed, and she felt only joy. The thought "What was I so afraid of anyway?" entered her consciousness as linear time ceased to exist. A beckoning to rest led to sleep. She awoke coughing water on the pool walkway with a young male college student asking if she was okay, having been given CPR. The experience motivated her to learn swimming within two weeks, overcoming her fear of cold water. She received newspaper coverage for her swimming lessons at Lake Coeur d'Alene. The experience granted her the gift of knowing there is nothing to fear about dying and that consciousness continues after bodily death.
