Ryan and his wife were awakened by news that his mother-in-law was in her final moments from melanoma. While his wife went to her mother's side, Ryan went to the emergency room feeling unwell. Initially discharged with anxiety diagnosis, he was called back when tests revealed he was having a heart attack. While being re-admitted with difficulty getting an IV line, he closed his eyes and prayed the Our Father repeatedly. Instantly, he found himself in a train depot or meeting place filled with clusters of brilliant light resembling Star Trek transporter effects. These lights provided peaceful feelings. Focusing on one cluster, he discovered it was his mother-in-law who had passed only an hour or two earlier. He experienced overwhelming calmness and peace, initially thinking he would go with her, but she communicated he would be okay. What felt like 60 minutes was actually seconds. He awoke surrounded by doctors still working on his IV. The experience eliminated his lifelong anxiety about uncontrollable situations. He became more in-tune with his intuition and better able to recognize when God speaks through circumstances and people. The shared experience with his recently deceased mother-in-law was particularly meaningful given their prior conversations about faith.
